HPFF Internet Safety Week

Posted by timeturner , 12 November 2011 · 759 views

Dec. 12: Staff edit. The winning entry in this competition can be found here and was by TheGoldenKneazle

While the senior staff prepare for their Night of Writing Dangerously, we want to make sure all our members stay safe so we've deemed this week Internet Safety Week @HPFF!

We have always prided ourselves on being a safe, family friendly site and now two very special authors have joined us to help promote and educate everyone on the need for safety online.

Frederick Lane, author of the book Cybertraps for the Young, provides an amazing glimpse into the world on online safety that isn't seen anywhere else.  His book talks about how YOU break the law without even realizing it and how these "traps" can end you up in jail or even worse.  You can listen to the staff's interview with this author by clicking HERE

Author Sarah Darer Littman took the young adult world by storm with the release of her book Want to Go Private?  Holding no punches, she gets right to the heart of the dangers facing internet users in a way that grabs your attention and won't let go for the entire compelling ride. You can listen to the staff's interview with this author by clicking HERE

And now it's your turn!  We are a family and family means keeping everyone safe so it's time to spread the word and teach your fellow members about online safety.  Listen to the two special author podcasts and post up a blog entry talking about what you learned from the authors and what others need to learn about internet safety.

Contest

The most helpful entry as judged by staff will receive a copy of both books and all entrants will receive an HPFF United wristband (while supplies last).

DO YOUR PART AND HELP KEEP HPFF SAFE

(closing note: Is anyone else hearing Stitch's voice in their head?  "Family means no one gets left behind".  Oh, it is just me?  Please disregard then.)

hehehe, definitely not the only one hearing Stitch! Was the first that came to mind when I read that bit. :N will definitely head over to listen to those ASAP! I think it's actually such a good topic to be bringing up during NaNo, because you get so over eager and excited with your word count and friends and sharing things that sometimes internet safety can drift to the back of your mind. :) thank you for helping bring us the lovely interviews!

As a mother, this topic is close to my heart. I find, though, that I think more about the safety of my girls online and tend to 'forget' when it comes to me. So often, we think we're safe when we're really leaving ourselves wide open to predators. I'm so thankful our site is vigilant (go Mad-Eye!) in our mission to provide a safe place for everyone. I can let my oldest two come and play on the forums without fearing they'll attract a 'stray' they can't shake. I look forward to listening to these authors and hearing what they have to say.
(And I TOTALLY heard Stitch. We're Disney freaks up in here at my house.)

disney fanatic here ^_^, naturally stitch and many other disney quotes just roll off the tongue lol.

Will definitely listen to those podcasts, safety is a big thing for me. I check up on my little sister, warn the grandparents and parents too! They don't really need it but I always like to make sure, even though they don't really use the computer. It's always good to keep safe and it is great that you've brought us the interviews.
You can also download the podcasts on itunes to put onto your ipod to listen to in your car or on the bus :). Look for harrypotterpodcast.com.

In addition, you can listen through HPPC's main site.
